World Champ Don clinches Corus Elite Series in Hyde Park

22 Jul 2007

Victory for World Champion Don at 2012 Venue

Tim Don won today's Corus Elite Series triathlon in Hyde Park, the proposed venue for London 2012.

In a new super sprint race format, which included heats and a final over a 300m swim, 7km bike, 2.5km run course in and around The Serpentine, World Champion Don cruised through to the 20 strong final along with a host of international and home nation athletes.

The swim was led out by Surrey's Richard Stannard with all of the athletes in close contention, and this transpired onto the bike where 13 of the top competitors forged a breakaway pack. Scotland's Fraser Cartmell was first onto the run, but it wasn't long before Don hit the front and raced to victory. Christian Weimer from Germany held on for second whilst World Junior Champion, Alistair Brownlee, outsprinted Londoner Stuart Hayes for third.

Tim commented:

'It was an amazing experience to race at the future Olympic venue and I enjoyed the super sprint format. The sun was shining and the crowd were enthusiastic - a perfect combination for a triathlon. I've got a big month ahead of me including defending my World title in Hamburg, so this was great preparation.'

The women's race saw a head to head battle between Australian Erin Densham and Britain's rising talent, Hollie Avil.

Avil, the European Junior Champion, almost crashed into the course boards on the bike, but managed to stay upright and re-joined the main cycle pack. Densham, the World Under 23 Champion, exited for the run ahead of Britain's Andrea Whitcombe and Kerry Lang; but it was Avil who ran through from 10 seconds down to put up the strongest challenge. Densham held on for the win with Avil in second and Whitcombe in third.

Erin commented:

'I really enjoyed racing here. It's almost like a rite of passage for Australian's to do well on the European race circuit, so today's win is rewarding.'
