The final Corus Kids of Steel event in a summer long series took place in Newport on Thursday (12th July).
300 children from local schools aged between 8 and 13 turned up to try a triathlon, with many of them expressing interest in continuing their new found sport with the local Newport and East Wales Triathlon Club.
The Corus Kids of Steel events aim to encourage kids to experience the sport of triathlon, and help them get active in a fun and safe environment. At a time when childhood obesity is at an all time high, Corus and British Triathlon are aiding the government’s Healthy School Programme through giving kids an opportunity to take up a new sport whilst learning about healthy living.
The Newport event included a 75m swim, 1km cycle and an 800m run over a course around Newport International Sports Village. The Corus Kids of Steel followed on from the Corus Elite Series British Triathlon Championships which was held in Parc Bryn Bach near Tredegar last month, featuring World Champion, Tim Don.
British Triathlon’s Development Director, Mark Barfield, said:
“The Corus Kids of Steel event in Newport was a great success. I was bowled over by the enthusiasm the kids brought to the event. This series is a very exciting prospect for triathlon in Britain. Not only are we giving children an opportunity to try out a new sport and offering them advice on healthy living, we also hope to discover some young stars of the future.”
Nicola Bennett, Communications Manager at Corus Steel Packaging Recycling, attended the event and arranged for all entrants to receive a bag packed with a range of recycling goodies including a fun DVD about the steel recycling process, pencils, a notepad and a ruler.
Nicola commented:
"The Kids of Steel Triathlon is a great event for Corus to be involved in and it was a good opportunity for us to raise awareness of the importance of recycling - both through the goodie bags and the information stand that we had at the event. Recycling is such an important issue and we are finding that people of all ages want to make a positive difference to the environment. By finding out a little bit more about steel and the many different household products made using steel that are 100% recyclable, we hope that those who took part in the event were encouraged to increase the amount of steel they recycle."
