Whilst back in the UK for a short while I thought I’d take the chance to introduce myself and update you with my progress so far this season as a Corus Ambassador.  I started competing in triathlon when I was 16 after spending much of my childhood swimming for my local club.  I had participated in a couple of small kids triathlon events when I was 11 but after continuously falling off my bike I quickly decided it wasn’t for me!  My Dad had competed in a couple of triathlons and really enjoyed it, so when I was approached to go on a triathlon training day five years later I thought I’d give it another go.  Looking back there wasn’t really much competition at all when I started, with many races hosting only six or seven girls, so gaining experience took time.  Corus has worked hard to create opportunities like Kids of Steel and the Corus Elite Series which gives youngsters the chance to compete at a higher level at a much younger age which will put them that step further ahead through the experience that they gain.

Being an Olympic year, 2008 is a really important season for me, especially since I battled through 2007 with a bad injury.  I tore my Achilles tendon in 2006 and unfortunately got back into training too soon so consequently injured myself long term.  I competed only once last season so have worked hard to get myself on the start line in Madrid, the qualifying race for the GB Olympic Team at the end of May.  I don’t feel under too much pressure as I’m pleased with how far I’ve come and I’m making sure I’ll be in the best condition possible for the race.  In terms of qualifying for the Olympics, it is of course constantly on my mind but I am very young and 2012 is just around the corner so I’m not going to unnecessarily pressure myself.   I just can’t wait to get on that start line and battle it out for a place in the team!

Because of my injury plagued season in 2007, funding has been diffiult this year.  However, the support Corus has given me as a Corus Ambassador has allowed me to train full time rather than having to work to support myself.  This Olympic year is of such importance for us triathletes and we find ourselves in the position where we need all the help we can get.  Corus has made it so much easier for us to work towards our goals and the difference they have made is immeasurable.
