Triathlon

TriathlonTriathlon is a sport with three different components: Swimming, cycling and running. A triathlon race is continuous, with no stop between the three legs. Changeovers - known as transitions - are vital to the race strategy.

The Olympic distance triathlon, which is one of the 28 Olympic sports, consists of: 1500m open water swimming, 40km cycling and 10km running. At the Olympics both the men's and the women's events are capped at 55 qualified competitors. The time taken to get in and out of kit and on and off the bike can have a huge impact on the race. The leading men will take approximately 1 hour and 45mins and the women 1 hour 50 minutes to complete the distance, depending on the course.

Each sport requires the competitor to be in peak physical condition and with three such individual sports it calls on the athlete to commit to a rigorous training schedule.
